A Birthing

Listen to Dr. Dave read it HERE

With tail high

and legs astride,

she took her jagged steps.

Till where turf grew well,

and aspens fled,

she lay her body down.

With muted groan,

and rhythmic strain

she set about her work.

Till with each her effort,

and each her moan,

she made a vessel burst.

And from her womb

a river flowed

to quench the crusted earth.

With pain and toil

the moments fled

to give nose and feet and head,

Until, with a mighty heave,

and jump afoot,

she said her first hello.

And as I watched

her babe’s maiden breaths,

I smiled at her and thought,

“Girl, we do share a beautiful world!”
